New business

Young & Restless’ New Business Rivalry: Adam and Sally vs. Kyle and Summer

Young & Restless try to dial in the drama, but they really just turned up the volume. Watching Phyllis scream and Victor rage might be a hoot, but we still need things to actually happen. We had a catfight for May Sweeps, but ended the month with characters just repeating the same talking points. Less talk, more action: If Adam wants Newman, he’d have to do something sneaky to get him. If Imani wants Nate, she should seduce him!

Phyllis is definitely losing her mind over Diane, who did nothing more than a well-timed little prod. Just knowing what her nemesis is capable of (and what his agenda almost certainly is) drives Phyllis completely into the bend. To the point that she does Diane’s dirty work for her by sabotaging her own relationship with Jack. Believe me, Diane will be moving in with Patriarch Abbott shortly.

Let there be conflict and disorder

Why the hell is Amanda so determined to defend Elena, who slept with her boyfriend Nate and reconnected with Devon after they started dating? If we could have nice things on this soap – like conflict – she would sit and watch the fireworks as her sister Imani sent a small karmic reward in the direction of Dr. Dawson. Of course, there’s never been any credible fallout from the cheating, so why would we start now? In all cases, Young and restless must start To display and not only to tell about. We hear about Imani having her eye on Nate for eons – it’s all in the question. Let’s move on to seduction or at least attempts at seduction. Maybe she didn’t move because the company only holds meetings in public places…

blame game

Much has been made of the fact that Kyle was pushed into the restraining order against Ashland by Summer and Victor, when his first instinct was to prep Harrison first and tread carefully. This certainly seems to portend that the move will come back to bite him…and then who will he blame?

Whether that’s the writers’ intention or not, I have sympathy for Locke when it comes to Harrison. They really insist that he letting her young son think he was dying, but did he ever say such a thing to the boy? Not on screen.

Along those same lines, it was fun to see Sharon try Ashland for faking cancer. That said, I can’t seem to reach the same level of outrage even though it was obviously a dreadful thing to do. Maybe because we never seen Locke works his evil plot to take over Newman Enterprises – instead, we watched a love story. This is no doubt why so many people want Victoria and Ashland to reconcile and have sympathy for him now. Also, Victor and the others who judge him present themselves as hypocrites.

A rivalry for the ages?

The preview indicates that Victoria will tell Ashland that she wants to get back together, and the spoilers suggest that she will assert her independence, making it look like she’ll be saying goodbye to Newman. This, of course, will blow Victor’s head off and I’m kinda looking forward to it (although I wish they’d built to reconciliation). It’s also Adam’s dream scenario – at least if his father goes ahead and puts him in charge of Newman Enterprises. With Jack approving the purchase of Jabot/Marchetti, the stage is then set for a rivalry between a new generation of power couples – Adam and Sally in NE versus Kyle and Summer in Jabot. It could be interesting if there is a decent story.

I have to wonder how Ashland and Victoria will fit into future storylines. Will they create a competing business? Will Locke buy a controlling stake in Marchetti to annoy the Abbotts since he’s already an investor? Or maybe they’ll fight for custody of Harrison?

Who needs sleeping pills?

Noah and Allie discussing Billy’s podcasts? Really?!? Do they want to move us forward quickly? The phrase “like watching paint dry” applies here. There is no chemistry/warmth between these two and sadly they are boring separately and together. Young and restless might want to think about bringing Crystal back to GC to mix it up with Sharon and Nick’s son, which would also give the Tessa family to town.

It’s just my opinion. Feel free to join the conversation below.
