New business

WHAT’S NEW WEDNESDAY: Bradford couple create ‘magical events’ with new venture

John and Shaina Pirri, a couple from Bradford, recently opened their own events company, Magical Events.

On Sunday, the couple set up shop at the Portuguese Cultural Center for The Sunday Market shopping event, handing out free bags of popcorn and cotton candy. Both were happy to be in the community, interacting with potential buyers and customers.

John is from Bradford and met Shaina from Midland when they attended Georgian College 18 years ago.

“I’m a local,” John laughs, “I’ve been here all my life.”

The couple then moved to Bradford in 2010 and have three children together, a six-year-old daughter and a three-year-old twin son.

Their children are the inspiration for their business. The idea to go into business was born last year, after seeing a need for home entertainment throughout the pandemic.

Running a business in town is nothing new for the couple, who also own local cleaning company J&S Cleaning Solutions.

The advantage of owning a business in town is that “everyone knows who you are,” says John.

Magical Events is constantly looking for new ways to entertain its customers.

“We want to stand out because we have competition, so we have to be different,” Shaina explained.

Magical Events offers entertainment rentals on everything from bouncy castles, obstacle courses and games. They also offer snow cone, popcorn and cotton candy machine rentals and are currently considering providing loot bags for kids’ birthday parties.

The company recently introduced a new portable wood-burning oven to its rental inventory, which it says will be a popular holiday rental piece once warmer weather arrives. The couple expect event activity to resume quickly as COVID restrictions begin to loosen.

John says their goal is to become a “one stop shop” for all party rental needs.

“Anything you can think of, we can rent it to you,” he said.

The pair have a partnership with local bakery “Shugie Bakes” for customers wishing to add baked goods such as cakes, cupcakes and cookies to their event services. They said they were looking to work with other local entertainment companies in the near future to collaborate and offer

Magical Events serves Bradford and surrounding areas, north to Midland and south to Toronto.

In order to give back, Magical Events donates a portion of its profits to the Shine Through The Rain Foundation, which supports families through life-threatening illnesses.
