New products for electric vehicles, sustainability at BASF

Friedrichshafen, Germany – Electric vehicles and sustainability create opportunities for materials manufactured by BASF SE.

“We are preparing for new trends in electric mobility,” said Jürgen Becky, senior vice president of performance materials Europe, on October 13 at Fakuma 2021 in Friedrichshafen. “We are developing new safety concepts for our materials in powertrains and components.”

Materials manufactured by BASF in Ludwigshafen, Germany are also used in motors, batteries and battery boxes for electric vehicles. The company’s polyurethane foams also have EV applications.

Demand for EV materials in 2021 is up from 2019 and 2020, according to Becky. Supply chain issues have made it difficult for BASF to supply its customers in some cases.

BASF “is heading full speed ahead” towards sustainability, Becky said.

“The most important thing is to reduce CO2 emissions,” he added. BASF strives to achieve this objective by reducing the environmental impact of its production sites and by offering its customers bio-based or recycled content materials.

BASF is also finding opportunities for its polyphthalamide (PPA) resins specializing in fuel cells and consumer electronics, according to Abdullah Shaikh, global leader in PPA business management. The materials replace metal in fuel cells used in the powertrains of buses and trains.

In consumer electronics, BASF PPA is used in structural parts of laptops, Shaikh said. The materials have also recently been used in the components of a Casio watch.

Shaikh said PPA is often selected because of its higher melting temperature, high throughput, and ability to make very thin parts.

BASF also recently released a new grade of flame retardant Ultramid nylon 6/6 which expands the portfolio of color stable and tailor-made engineering plastics for use in electric cars.

Other new material offerings from BASF include:

• An Ultradur brand PBT grade which can be co-extruded with PVC and which is now available with a significantly improved property profile. Officials said that with the new Ultradur, PVC window profiles can be mechanically reinforced during the coextrusion process.

• An Ultradur grade for film extrusion and thermoforming of food packaging. The single material had excellent barrier properties and allows for mechanical recycling, officials said.

• A grade of Ultrason brand polyarylether sulfone (PAES) for domestic, automotive and electrical / electronic uses.

BASF manufactures a wide range of plastics and specialty chemicals. Globally, the company employs more than 110,000 people and in 2020 had sales of more than $ 69 billion.
