KeyBank National Association is an American regional bank that offers a variety of consumer banking products and services. The company was established in 1994 but its history dates back to 1825 at the Commercial Bank of Albany, New York. The Commercial Bank of Albany was incorporated in 1825, although it was reorganized under the National Banking Act of 1864 to become the National Commercial Bank of Albany. The company would continue to experience moderate growth and expansion for over a century, merging with First Trust and Deposit in 1971 to become the First Commercial Banks, renaming itself Key Bank in 1979. By then an ambitious new CEO named Victor J. Riley, Jr. would focus on growth and expansion through acquisitions, merging with numerous companies across New York before expanding his focus, shifting the assets of the company from $3 billion to $15 billion in just four years between 1985 and 1990. The Society National Bank was founded as the Society for Savings in 1849 as a mutual savings bank by Samuel H. Mather. The bank would remain extremely conservative despite its growth, allowing it to avoid the many depressions and financial panics of its inception in the 20th century. The company would go public in 1958 and begin acquiring a variety of smaller banks, renaming itself the Society National Bank. In the early 1990s, the company acquired Trustcorp and Ameritrust Bank. In 1994, Society National Bank would merge with Key Bank to form today’s KeyBank, the main subsidiary of KeyCorp, and make it one of the top 10 US banks for a time. The bank currently employs over 14,000 people and has total assets of over $91 billion. KeyBank is the 29th largest bank in the United States and is a nationally chartered bank with over 1,000 branches located in 31 states.
